Cool Info for Parents in Lausanne, Switzerland

The New Kindermusik Classes will start in September!

I received the following info today. I have enrolled my daughter (almost 2) to this program as I have heard good feedback from parents who had brought their children there. I think she will have a great time!

I have Kindermusik courses staring in September. Kindermusik classes are full of musically inspired activities and are for children to attend with a parent or other caregiver. I hope to start with four classes, details below, and would love to hear from anyone interested in enrolling. I am happy to offer a free trial class to any interested families.

KidSpace, Lausanne, Wednesdays or Fridays
9.30, Our Time, for children 18 months – three years
10.30, Village, for children up to 18 months
Courses starting throughout September.

The classes are conducted in English but use all types of music and children do
not need to speak English to enjoy the programme.
All classes are 45 minutes long and the programmes vary in length depending on
which class it is.

If you would like further details please contact me.

Oh my God! Darwin et l’évolution! (Updated)

darwin

I think this Saturday (Nov 7, 2009) is perfect for a trip to the Lausanne Museum of Zoology. First, it may be cloudy and a bit rainy. Second, it’s fee entry (as every first Saturday of the month). And third, the new exhibition “Oh my God! Darwin et l’évolution” to celebrate the life and work of Charles Darwin (whom, btw, was born in 1809) is now open. From what I heard there is an aquarium with a special kind of shellfish that only evolved very little over these million of years, and a special cinema showing 16 documentaries over the work of Darwin and evolution. They also offer a guided tour (most probably in French only) at 2pm that Saturday.

For more information, see this official website.

P.S.: Don’t forget that this weekend is also Family Museum Day for the Museums in Vaud Riviera (see my previous post).

UPDATE: We went to the exhibition today (Nov 7, 2009) and had so much fun. It was very well made and interesting (maybe our background as biologist/biotechnologist made it even more interesting for us). There is also a section with robots, hosted by EPFL, and an area dedicated as Atelier d’Enfants. Definitely worth a visit! Check our photo album for pics.

Musée de Zoologie, Lausanne

So I’ve been posting many activities for bigger children offered by the museums. That doesn’t mean that our 1 year-old cannot enjoy the museum. This weekend we proved it! We went to the Museum of Zoology in Palais de Rumine in Riponne.

zoologie

We got the idea from a colleague, Coco, who went there many times with her (then) toddlers when the days were cold and rainy. They have many stuffed animal corps that were quite impressive for a city as small as Lausanne.  The 2 exhibition rooms were a bit outdated and tired, but it may also due to the current preparation of Darwin’s Evolution exhibition on the other side of the building that took so much space. While outdated, it actually looked very clean, perhaps due to the small number of visitors. It was actually perfect for us, as our 1 year-old could wander around by herself, by toddling or crawling. We really enjoyed the museum and think it’s a good way to introduce our daughter to wild animals.

We also went to the museum café and found what I would never expected to see there on a sunny Saturday in a museum: There were so many students working on assignments! In fact they occupied most of the tables, but we managed to get a table, our coffee and ice cream. The café is small and self-serviced, but the coffee was good.

I guess we’ll be coming back often, especially on the first Saturday of the month when the entrance is free! For more info, check their site.

La Vallee de la Jeunesse

I know this is old news to many of my regular readers, but I think it will be useful for those who had never heard of this place. Now that it’s cold outside, indoor playrooms are desperately needed.

La Vallee de la Jeunesse is a place for children aged 0 to 5 years to play and meet other children, accompanied by their parents or other childminder. The adults should stay with their children at all time, and can use this time to relax, talk, meet other adults, or play with the children. It’s free and no registration is necessary.

Two professionals (qualified to help young children and families) will welcome you 3 days per week:

  • on Monday and Friday morning from 9 to 12AM
  • on Thursday afternoon from 3 to 6PM
