First Aid Courses For Parents and Carers

Taught in small groups by two British doctors, Dr Michelle Wright and Dr Penny Fraser, in a friendly, relaxed English-speaking setting. These courses are designed to provide practical advice and information for the expat community, away from their usual support networks of family, friends, GPs and other healthcare professionals.

Course 1: Child Cardio – Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
• Understand the principles of infant and child CPR
• Use manikins to practice the skills of opening an airway, giving rescue breaths and performing chest compressions
• Learn how to help a choking or drowned child
• Practice the safe positioning of an unconscious child
• Learn about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (cot death) and how to reduce the risk

Course 2: Child Accidents and Injuries
• Learn how to deal with burns, scalds and electrocution
• Understand the importance of head injuries and what to do
• What you should have in your first aid kit and how to use it
• How to deal with major bleeding, cuts, bites, broken bones and sprains
• What to do about accidental poisoning
• Dealing with eye injuries
• How painkillers work and when to use them

Course 3: The Unwell Child
• Learn about the danger of fevers and what to do
• Recognise the warning signs of meningitis
• What to do if your child has a severe allergic reaction
• Diarrhoea, chicken pox and other common illnesses
• Understand how to recognize an ill child and when to call the doctor
• How to deal with coughs and colds and other respiratory problems

Dr Penny Fraser MBBS BSc (Hons) MRCS

Penny Fraser is a mother of two girls and a British-trained doctor. She qualified from St Mary’s Hospital in London in 1999, then further specialised as a surgeon with a particular interest in emergency and plastic surgery. Living in Geneva since 2004, she worked at the Centre D’Accueil et D’Urgences in the Hôpital Universitaire de Genève until the arrival of her first daughter.

In response to a steady stream of medical questions from friends, expat parents and carers over the years, she created the Child Injuries and Illnesses course. These courses have been running regularly in Geneva and have now expanded into Vaud.

Dr Michelle Wright MBChB MRCGP DRCOG DCH

Michelle Wright is a British-trained General Practitioner (GP). She qualified from Bristol University Medical School in 1997. Michelle completed General Practice training and worked in a busy London practice as a GP for three years before moving to Switzerland in 2004. Michelle is a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners, England and also has postgraduate diploma in Child Health. She is a regular contributor on World Radio Switzerland and currently has a weekly medical show called Health Matters. Michelle also works as a medical author summarizing best-practice guidelines for doctors and writing information leaflets about health topics for patients. She runs a weekly Weight Loss Club in Geneva and also works part-time as a doctor with one of the United Nations organizations.
